With this aim in view efforts were made and initial activities to establish a Centre on the campus was lunched in 1993. After that some steps were taken in 1997 to materialize it. At last the project proposal for the establishment of Modern Language Centre at Khulna University was considered in the 90th Academic Council meeting held on 21 October 2001 and it was approved by the University Syndicate at its 88th meeting held on 10 November 2001.

Modern Language centre is a full-fledged independent part of the University. It will serve the purpose of meeting the need-based language demands of the inmates of the University. Moreover, the intending persons who can fulfil the requirements of the Centre and qualify in the placement tests will be able to be admitted to the different language courses.

The medium of instruction at Khulna University is at present English. The students have to go through their prescribed books and journals in English. English is taught as a compulsory subject in every Discipline of the University. Therefore, the centre will conduct such courses for the students that they can feel ease in undertaking lessons related to reading intensive higher English, comprehending and responding to it. Besides, the members on the staff of Khulna University may also need to acquire knowledge on certain languages with a view of offering their services more smoothly and efficiently and in order to easily acclimatize to the situations abroad where they would pursue higher studies in future. Above all, a learned one with an inquisitive mind may quench his thirst by learning a different language. Besides, other training courses may be introduced suitable for the linguistic scholars, personnel at foreign services and professionals at different kinds of jobs.

Thus, the ultimate aim of establishing this Centre which will be turned into an Institute of Modern Languages (according to the KU Act No. 54,1990) in future with facilities necessary for the study and utilization of the important modern languages of the world such as Arabic, Bangla, Chinese, English French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Spanish, Turkish, Urdu etc. The Centre, being the pioneer of its kind in the southern part of Bangladesh, will play a significant role in the field of language learning. Learning a new language is, indeed, to discover a new horizon and to experience a new outlook. Language learning is very interesting and if it is made effective and fruitful, ample benefit can be obtained.

In order to attain the goal, the Centre will offer both short term and long term courses. The Centre will arrange short intensive course of a few weeks’ duration and long term courses like Certificates of Proficiency and Diplomas in modern languages and such other Diplomas and Degrees to be decided upon by the University. Various audio-visual aids and methods will be used to conduct the courses.

In the month of January 2002, the present Hon’be Vice-chancellor of the University Professor Dr. M Abdul Quadir Bhuiyan took an initiative to start the Centre. As a result, the office of the Centre was created with its Director in charge, who already performed all the preliminary activities and correspondence has also been entered with the relevant authorities. So, now everything is in the process and it is hoped that very soon the Centre may start functioning offering courses for the interested and intending persons. When the Centre will be a full-fledged Institute, it aspires that Bangle Language Development cell and Translation cell will be created. At that time it will provide opportunities for carrying out advanced level research required in higher studies.
